New Employee and Volunteer Orientation  

This introduction course to the Disaster Services program of the American Red Cross provides basic information about disaster and its effects, outlines the roles of agencies (both governmental and nongovernmental) in disaster relief.  It is a prerequisite for all additional Disaster Services training. 

 

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action

course (DSGEN200A, Rev. 09/07) is a basic, entry level instructor-led course, which introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community's actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters. It provides the foundation of service delivery standards for the American Red Cross by considering the Fundamental Principles and Values of the Red Cross and how they would apply throughout the disaster cycle (prepare, respond and recover).

 

Introduction to Disaster Services 

Introduction to Disaster Services (ARC 3066, Rev 9/05) (Online or Home Study)  online course can now be accessed on the public website at http://www.redcross.org/donate/volunteer/ .      This introduction course to the Disaster Services program of the American Red Cross provides basic information about disaster and its effects outlines the roles of agencies (both governmental and nongovernmental) in disaster relief.  It is a prerequisite for all additional Disaster Services training. 

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services online course is to engage and inspire the public to actively participate in supporting American Red Cross disaster response.  This self-study course will introduce learners to American Red Cross Disaster Services and allow them to discover how volunteers support this critical mission and learn about ways they can become involved in their local chapter.

Viewers taking the course on the public website are linked to the chapter finder feature on www.redcross.org at the end of the course that may result in a number of potential volunteers who first view the course on the public site and then contact their local chapter for information about volunteer opportunities in Disaster Services.

 

 

 

Disaster Action Team (DAT) Workshop 

 

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services 

 

 

Mass Care Overview

 

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to provide an overview of the activities performed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation. Participants will be employees and volunteers of the Red Cross and other agencies and community leaders who wish to serve in or work with Mass Care group activities on a disaster relief operation.

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services 

 

 

Shelter Operations

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services course is to prepare volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.

Participants for this course will be volunteers and employees of the Red Cross and other agencies and community leaders who will be working on shelter operations teams.

 Prerequisite:  successful completion of one of the following courses is required before enrolling in this course;

Shelter Simulation 

 

The purpose of this training is to provide participants with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter. 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services, Mass Care Overview, Shelter Operations

 

 

 

 

 

ERV’s: Ready, Set, Roll 

 

The purpose of this training is to prepare Red Cross paid and volunteer Staff to safely and effectively use an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and its equipment to meet feeding and other service needs of the people affected by disaster.  This class comprises of two parts.  Both must be taken in order to be certified to operate the ERV. The ERV is a nationally owned vehicle, of which we retain custodial care.  One of the responsibilities is to provide trained drivers for both local and national operations.  Those persons driving this vehicle, whether locally or on a national Disaster Response, need certification with the following: 

 

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Defensive Driving Course

  • Satisfactory DMV report (Type 2)

  • Successful completion of both parts of the ERV training 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services, Mass Care Overview

 

Logistics: An Overview 

 

The purpose of this training is to provide basic information about the activities and processes of the Logistics function in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation.  Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by Logistics workers and how they can get started in their local chapter. 

 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services

 

Disaster Health Services:  An Overview 

 

This course helps participants identify Disaster Health Services (DHS) preparedness measures that should take place at the local chapter level.  Participants will also become familiar with Red Cross certification, DHS policies, regulations, and procedures that apply on locally administered disaster relief operations.                        Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services

 

 

 

 

 

Disaster Mental Health Services:  An Overview 

 

The purpose of this course is to help participants understand the Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS) function within the American Red Cross Disaster Services Program.  Participants will learn how DMHS supports disaster relief workers and people affected by disaster.                    Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services 

 

 

 

Foundations of Disaster Mental Health 

 

The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to provide licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. 

 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services, Must be a licensed or certified Mental Health professional. 

 

 

 

Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism:  An Overview 

 

This course provides basic information about the issues and safety concerns in performing our work in an environment involving Weapons of Mass Destruction and/or Terrorism (WMD/T) incident. 

 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services

 

 

 

 

 

Emergency Operations Center/Incident Command Liaison 

 

The purpose of this basic Disaster Services course is to prepare Red Cross volunteers and employees who will be assigned to government and emergency settings to work collaboratively with Red Cross partners, helping to ensure a coordinated response that results in effective service delivery.

Working with Total Diversity 

 

The course replaces the Serving the Diverse Community.  A skills-based training course that provides the tools for creating inclusive relationships with colleagues and clients.  It focuses on the conversational skills participants will need to be effective in working and serving in diverse communities. 

 

Prerequisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services

 

 

 

 

Collaborating to Ensure Effective Service Delivery 

 

The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to establish collaborative relationships that contribute to coordinated disaster response and help ensure effective service delivery.  This course will also prepare participants conducting liaison activities in a chapter and establish a foundation for future service in the community partnerships.

What if I’m late for class? 

 

Since the core of most programs is taught at the beginning of class, you won’t want to miss a minute of class time.  In order to maximize training time, session times are firm.  Late arrivals are admitted at the discretion of the instructor. 

 

Can I transfer or cancel a class? 

 

If you need to transfer or cancel a class, please let us know at least two full working days in advance so we may fill your space.  Please be sure to call during regular business hours.  

 

Will there be breaks and lunches ? 

Full-day classes include time for breaks and a lunch.  Other courses will allow for dedicated breaks. 

 

 

 

 

 

How many students need to be registered for a class to make? 

Many of the classes need to have a minimum of 6 students registered.  Classes may be cancelled and those enrolled will be notified two days prior by email.
